Like father, like daughter Freeda Foreman now has opponent for April 1 debutPosted: Wednesday March 15, 2000 07:07 PM
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Freeda Foreman, daughter of two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman, now has an opponent for her boxing debut April 1. In a four-round super middleweight bout at the Regent Hotel and Casino, Foreman, who recently said she was turning pro, will meet Tiffany McCray, also making her debut. In another bout on the card, Adolpho Washington will replace Lawrence Clay-Bey, diagnosed with retinal tears in both eyes, as the opponent for Chris Byrd in a fight for the vacant NABF heayweight title. The selection of Washington (28-8-2, 17 knockouts), a former IBF cruiserweight champion, was announced by promoter America Presents on Wednesday. Freeda Foreman, 23, is following in the footsteps of Laila Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali, and Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, daughter of Joe Frazier. "My goal is to change history and knock Laila out," Freeda said recently. "It's not revenge, but the opportunity is there for me." Foreman's loss to Ali in 1974 in Zaire was one of the most devastating of his career. The fight was among the most memorable heavyweight bouts of the era. Freeda's opportunity is one that her father isn't embracing. "He flat out doesn't like it," Freeda said. "But I do have his love and support. That's what counts." The third oldest of Foreman's 10 children, Freeda was working as a customer relations clerk or United Parcel Service in Greenville, South Carolina, only a month ago. A single mother of a 4-year-old, Foreman quit UPS and hooked up with promoter Dan Goossen of America Presents. She trained under Goossen's brother, Larry, in Colorado Springs, Colo. "This is a dream of mine and I know positively it can come true," Foreman said. "As long as the demand is there, I'll be there. I want to let women know there are no limitations."
