FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich has been notified officially that he is under an Italian doping investigation, his team confirmed Friday.

"There are absolutely no new aspects, it's a formality," Team Telekom chief Rudy Pevenage told the German sports news agency SID.

Ullrich, who finished second to Lance Armstrong in this year's Tour de France, was given official papers earlier this week by Italian police during the Tour of Lucca.

The German star is one of the cyclists under a doping investigation being conducted by Florence prosecutor Francesco Bocciolini.

Italian police seized different medicine from Ullrich's room in a raid during the Giro d'Italia in June.

Ullrich's team officials say they were asthma prescription drugs to fight an allergy that had been cleared by the international cycling federation (UCI).

Italian investigators maintain the drugs contained illegal stimulants.
