BERCHTESGADEN, Germany -- Austria's Michaela Dorfmeister won her 11th World Cup race Saturday, trouncing the competition in a giant slalom by more than a second.

The world downhill champion used her speed and gliding ability to attack the flat Goetschen slope and complete her runs in two minutes 24.32 seconds.

That was 1.01 seconds better than Norway's Stina Hofgard Nilsen at 2:25.33.

Canada's Genevieve Simard took third at 2:25.43.

Dorfmeister also took over the lead in the overall World Cup standings with 708 points in a close race with Switzerland's Sonja Nef, whose fourth place finish left her at 651.

Dorfmeister, a favorite for combination gold and contender for several other medals at the Olympics, turned in two blistering runs on the sunny cold day, taking advantage of a flat slope that favored those versed in the speed disciplines.

Nilsen, seeking her first career victory, was the unexpected leader before Dorfmeister took the final run.

The Austrian, attacking the gates aggressively, was a whopping 1.47 seconds ahead of Nilsen's time halfway down the slope.

It was Dorfmeister's second giant slalom triumph of the season and seventh of her career.
