Volvo to arrange new ocean race Posted: Wednesday June 05, 2002 10:13 PMSTOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- A second Volvo Ocean Race will start in Europe in the fall of 2005, organizers said Wednesday as eight yachts prepared for the final leg of this year's around-the-world competition. The 2005-2006 yacht race will probably include stops in the United States, South Africa, Asia and South America, Volvo said. The company said it made its decision due to heavy interest in this year's event, which featured closer racing than usual. Swedish team Assa Abloy earned 49 points after winning the eighth and penultimate stage of the current race in a close midnight finish in the southwestern port city of Goteborg on May 30, but the German yacht illbruck Challenge maintained the overall lead with 54. They were followed in the standings by Amer Sports One, News Corp., Tyco, SEB, Djuice and Amer Sports Too. The fleet will set out on Saturday for the ninth and final leg of the race to Kiel, Germany. The boats will have traveled to 10 ports in the 32,700-mile race, which started in Southampton, England, last Sept. 23. More details about the next race will be announced next spring.
