ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) -- Landseer was euthanized Saturday after breaking his right leg coming around the final turn in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

"It was such a severe fracture. It was compound," said Dr. Wayne McIlwraigh, the on-call veterinarian. "He was euthanized immediately. There was no chance of saving him once it was in pieces."

Dr. Larry Bramlage said Landseer broke his cannon bone below the knee in the middle of the leg. The horse then tried to catch the pack after he was injured.

Landseer was a four-time winner in his two-year career. He was owned by Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor and trained by Aidan O'Brien.
