Virginia edges Princeton in NCAA men's lacrosse
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Colin Briggs and Chris Bocklet scored two goals each, and Virginia opened defense of its men's lacrosse national championship with a 6-5 victory against Princeton in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Cavaliers (12-3) scored Sunday in the final seconds of the first and second quarters and led 5-2 at halftime. The goal just before the intermission came after Chris LaPierre hit Steele Stanwick with a 60-yard pass. Stanwick scored with 5 seconds left.
Jeff Froccaro scored twice in the third quarter to pull the Tigers (11-5) within a goal.
Bocklet's 34th goal of the season midway through the final quarter doubled the Cavaliers' lead, but Tom Schreiber scored with 1:19 remaining for the Tigers.
Virginia goalie Rob Fortunato finished with eight saves on 34 shots.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Jim Marlatt scored three goals and added two assists as No. 4 seed Notre Dame defeated unseeded Yale in the first round of the NCAA lacrosse tournament.
Notre Dame (12-2), which had nine players score, advanced to play defending champion Virginia next Sunday in Philadelphia. Yale, which had won nine straight games, ended its season at 11-5.
The Irish scored the first four goals in the first 8:04 before Yale responded by scoring four of the next five goals. Notre Dame's Sean Rogers snaked home a key shot with 7 seconds left before halftime to make it 6-4.
The Irish took total control in the third period. After Ryan Foley scored, Marlatt scored twice in a span of 1:37 and Will Corrigan added another as Notre Dame established a 10-5 edge heading into the last quarter.
Daron Dempster led Yale with four goals.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) -- Drew Snider and Joe Cummings combined for five goals, Charlie Raffa won 10 faceoffs, and Niko Amato had six saves as Maryland outlasted Lehigh on Sunday night in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
The Mountain Hawks (14-3) were led by Kyle Stiefel's three goals and Matt Poillon's 16 saves, but Lehigh blew an 8-6 lead in the fourth quarter, after outscoring the Terrapins, 4-0, in the third.
Maryland (10-5) moves on to face Johns Hopkins on Saturday at Navy-Marine Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., in the quarterfinals. Owen Blye had four assists, and Mike Chanenchuk added two more for Maryland. Johns Hopkins handled Stony Brook, 19- 9, in the opening round on Sunday.
Ryan Snyder won nine faceoffs for the Mountain Hawks, and David DiMaria, Dante Fantoni and Roman Lao-Gosney each had one assist in the losing effort.
