Kulick the winner in bowling finals held outdoors
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Kelly Kulick won her third career U.S. Women's Open title under unique conditions.
Kulick defeated Missy Parkin on Wednesday night on temporary outdoor lanes beneath the arch that proclaims Reno the "Biggest Little City in the World."
Competitors had to contend with winds gusting between 18 and 24 mph and dust throughout the finals played along Reno's main casino drag. Kulick likened it to bowling in the desert.
Steve Johnson, executive director of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America, came up with the idea as a way to try to top last year's event, which drew a record crowd in excess of 6,000 to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Reno finals will be broadcast July 3 on ESPN2.
