Palmer is suffering from muscle fatigue syndrome, causing him to miss the Commonwealth Games Ben Radford/Allsport

LONDON (Reuters) -- European champion Paul Palmer has been forced to withdraw from England's Commonwealth Games swimming team through illness, it was announced Wednesday.

A statement from the Commonwealth Games Council for England said Palmer was suffering from muscle fatigue syndrome and would return from the Malaysian island of Penang, where the England team is training for the September 11-21 Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Palmer is the current 200-meters freestyle European champion, 1996 Olympic 400 freestyle silver medalist and 1998 world championship 400 freestyle bronze medallist.

He missed the 1994 Commonwealth Games through injury.
