GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Hungary's Agnes Kovacs raced one of the few good times Saturday at the Arena Festival World Cup short course swimming meet, taking the women's breaststroke in 1 minute, 07.47.

Germany's Mark Warnecke captured the men's 50 meter breaststroke in 27.59 seconds, well off his world record mark of 26.70, as German swimmers took first in eight of 17 events during the first day of the meet held in a 25-meter pool.

Freerik Deburghgraeve, the 100-meter breaststroke Olympic and world champion, was eliminated in a preliminary heat in the 50 meters in the same discipline in a time of 28.67 seconds.

German head coach Manfred Thiesmann complained that 12 World Cups were too many for the swimmers, who had often produced world records at the meet in past years. The event is the 11th of the season.

"There are far too many competitions. Which swimmer is strong enough to stand up to it? Where are the records supposed to come from?" said Thiesmann.

Germany's Franziska van Almsick won the women's 200 freestyle in 1:58.31, well off the pace of her world record at 1:56.78, while compatriot Sandra Voelker easily took the women's 50 meter backstroke in 28.06. beating another German and European champion, Antje Buschschulte in 28.34.
