GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Germany's Thomas Rupprath missed breaking his 50-meter backstroke world record by nine-hundredths of a second Sunday as the Arena Festival swim short course World Cup ended amid complaints that no new records were set.

German swim officials said there are too many swim meets, leaving swimmers too tired to race good times. In 16 previous years, the two-day meet had produced 58 world and 52 European records.

"It can't go on like this -- we have to reduce the number of competitions in international swimming," said Ruediger Tretow, president of the German Swim Federation.

Rupprath had one of the few outstanding times at the event, the 11th of an expanded 12 World Cups, which many top swimmers skipped. He won in 24.22 seconds, while his record is 24.13.

"I'm speechless that I missed my world record by just nine-hundredths," said Rupprath.

Hungary's Agnes Kovacs captured the women's 50 and 200 meter breastroke to give her three firsts at the event after winning Saturday's 100. Britain's Sue Rolph also dominated the freestyle, winning the 50 and 100, while Ukraine's Jana Klotchkova won the 00 and 400 medley.

Germany's Christian Keller also took three firsts in the men's medley races, winning the 200 Sunday to go along with his 100 and 400 triumphs Saturday. He was among several swimmers who wrapped up the $10,000 prize for the best results in the 12 World Cups.
