World Champs lead the way at short course meet

IMPERIA, Italy (AP) -- Defending world champions Marcel Wouda, Agnes Kovacs and Denys Sylantiev took the limelight Wednesday in the opening events of the two-day World Cup short course swimming competition in this Italian Riviera resort.

Wouda, the Dutch holder of the world 200-meter medley title, won over the double distance in 4:10.97 minutes as he beat German runnerup Christian Keller by nearly two seconds.

Hungary's Kovacs dominated the women's 100-meter breaststroke in one minute, 7.06 seconds as Olympic champion Amanda Beard of the United States finished a distant fifth, 2.9 seconds behind the winner.

Ukrainian Sylantiev beat Russians Anatoli Poliakov and Alexander Gorguraki in the 200-meter butterfly, clocking a winning time of one minute, 54.94 seconds.

Other winners in the 12th and last stage of the 1999 World Cup included Mette Jacobsen of Denmark and Sweden's Johanna Sjoberg in the women's 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly respectively.

Italy's Domenico Fioravanti upset European champion Patrik Isksson in the 50 breaststroke, edging the Swedish opponent by 0.36 seconds.

Another Italian, Emiliano Brembilla, beat Chad Carvin of the United States in the 400 freestyle.

Brembilla won the race in 3:45.08 minutes. Carvin was timed in 3:45.65.

Eighteen races are scheduled on the closing day Thursday.
