Klim: "I felt I was capable of a lot more. I just wanted to be tough and put up a good fight tonight." Adam Pretty/Allsport

BRISBANE (Reuters) -- World record holder Michael Klim won back his 100-meter butterfly title and gained revenge over Geoff Huegill at the Australian championships on Friday.

Klim held off Commonwealth champion Huegill to win by two hundredths of a second in a time of 53.10 seconds.

Huegill, who upset Klim to win last year's Australian title before beating him again in Kuala Lumpur, touched in 53.12 with Olympic silver medallist Scott Miller third in 53.51.

"Someone mentioned to me that Geoff Huegill had beaten me four out of the last five times. Normally I'm not a guy for statistics but for a world record holder to be beaten that often is probably not a very good sign," Klim said.

"I felt I was capable of a lot more. I just wanted to be tough and put up a good fight tonight."

In other results, medley specialist Emma Johnson won the women's 200-meter backstroke race less than three days after returning from the United States where she is at university.

Rachel Harris won the women's 800-meter freestyle race and Sydney lawyer Chris Fydler produced a sparkling finish to win the men's 50 meter freestyle.

Earlier in the day, Grant Hackett easily topped the list of qualifiers for the men's 1,500 meter freestyle.

Hackett broke Giorgio Lamberti's 1989 world record in the 200 on Tuesday and is expected to challenge fellow Australian Kieren Perkins' 1,500-meter record on Saturday.

The championships are doubling as the Australian trials for this year's Pan Pacific championships in Sydney.
