Robbers shoot Rangel in failed heist

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- South American swimming champion Mariana Moraes Rangel was recovering Saturday from a gunshot wound to the leg, suffered a day earlier when robbers tried to steal her car, hospital officials said.

The 23-year-old continental 800-meter freestyle champ was shot in the thigh late Friday as she thwarted the attempt to steal her car in Rio de Janeiro, said Catia Oliveira, a spokeswoman for the Souza Aguira hospital.

Despite her injury, the Brazilian drove on to a gas station to get help, Oliveira said. She later had surgery and was expected to recover fully.
