NEW YORK (AP) -- The beach volleyball court in Central Park, praised by the men's players last week, drew raves again as the women's tournament began.

The court is made of 1 million pounds of Canadian sand dumped on the concrete of an ice-skating rink on the southern edge of Central Park.

Players have complimented the quality of the surface, saying it feels like a real beach, and the backdrop of shade trees and the looming skyscrapers of midtown Manhattan.

"It has to be the nicest venue," Australia's Pauline Manser said. "It's the best beach we've been on. The sand is perfect."

"This is probably the 'funest' place we've ever played," added Germany's Danja Musch. "It's just great to sit there during timeouts watching the skyscrapers."
