YANGON, Myanmar (AP) -- Myanmar will host the Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton Championship 1999 from July 11 to 17 in Yangon, the vice president of the International Badminton Federation, Datuk Punch Gunalan, announced at a press briefing Monday.

"This will be the third Asian Juniors Championship tournament, the first being held in Manila in 1997 and the second championship in Kuala Lumpur in 1998," said Gunalan, a former badminton champion and also honorary secretary general of the Asian Badminton Confederation.

The 33-member countries of the confederation will be invited to participate in the "Under-19 Juniors Championship," which will be held at the national indoor stadium in Yangon. More than two hundred contestants from over 20 countries are expected to take part.

"The Asian Championship is a stepping stone to the World Juniors Championship," said Gunalan. "Asia dominates in badminton and the intention of the confederation was to take the juniors championship to developing countries."

The championship will be sponsored by the Golden Eagle company, a sister company of Myanmar Sampoerna Tobacco Company, which is a Myanmar-Indonesian joint venture.
