INDIANAPOLIS (CNN/SI) -- IRL driver Jim Guthrie is headed home to recuperate from injuries he suffered in Sunday's Indianapolis 500.

Guthrie, who sustained several broken bones in a multicar crash, was released from Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital on Wednesday. He flew back to his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Guthrie, 36, was the only driver hurt in a seven-car crash on the 49th lap of Sunday's race. He underwent surgery for a broken right elbow and also broke his left leg, cracked ribs and received a small cut to his right leg.

Doctors had said he likely would remain hospitalized another day or two. Full recovery has been projected for 4-6 weeks.
