The lead changed hands 15 times in the 1989 race before Emerson Fittipaldi (20 above, with A.J. Foyt), who led the most times (eight) and the most laps (158), took his first checkered flag at Indy. Leader Al Unser Jr. crashed with two laps remaining, paving the way for Fittipaldi.
