Kenny Bräck captured the 1998 IRL championship for
A.J. Foyt's Power Team on the strength of three
straight wins (Charlotte, Pikes Peak, Atlanta).
Ex-Formula One test driver for Williams and Arrows
teams, Swedish native won the Barber/Saab series in
1993. Runner-up in 1996 Formula 3000 series.
Bräck filled in admirably for the injured Davy Jones
starting with the Phoenix 200 in 1997, where he led 24 laps before a hard crash.
At Indianapolis he qualified 15th but was involved in a pace-lap crash with
Affonso Giaffone and Stephan Gregoire, ending his day with a 33rd-place finish.
His season really started to get on track at Charlotte and New Hampshire with
back-to-back fifth-place finishes. He led another six laps at Las Vegas before
succumbing to a suspension problem.
Bräck started his career in go-karts and Formula Fords in Sweden. He ran in the
Swedish Formula 3 Championship in 1988 and '89, winning four races. In 1990
and '91 he earned four podium finishes for the Formula Opel Lotus team in
Europe. He also tested a Formula 3 car in Japan in 1991.
Bräck's first championship came in 1992 when he captured the Renault Clio
Scandinavian Championship with nine wins and a second-place finish. In 1993 he
took the 1993 Zerex Barber Saab Series title with six victories. He also finished
fourth in the Eurocup Renault Clio Elf Series despite running only four of seven
races, two of which he won. He also tested a Williams Renault Formula One car.
In 1994 he finished 11th in the International Formula 3000 Championship and
moved up to third the next year. In 1996 he was runner-up in the series, gaining
two wins, two seconds and two thirds.
