Tyce Carlson took over for the injured John Paul Jr. at
Indy in 1997 and qualified 26th. Ran as high as sixth
before being sidelined by accident. Made four starts in
'98 Pep Boys series with a best finish of 10th at
Charlotte. Campagined USAC midgets since 1991, with
one victory in 1993.
Carlson and Immke Racing failed to make the 1998
Indianapolis 500, and the team had to take provisionals just to start the first two
races of the season.
Carlson ran five IRL races, mostly as an injury replacement for John Paul Jr. and
PDM racing, with a top finish of 11th. He finished 19th after crashing out at
Indianapolis. His appearance at Las Vegas came with the newly formed Immke
Racing.
He won his first USAC midget race at Salem in 1993. However, his first win
came in 1982 in a Honda Odyssey race. Carlson also ran in the All American
Midget Series, grabbing the rookie of the year honors in 1989. He continued in
this series through 1990. The following year he moved to USAC.
In 1996 he made an attempt to make the Indianapolis 500 field; his qualification
laps were enough to land him a second alternate spot.
