Robby Unser will serve Team Cheever as a test driver in 1999 due to lack of a
sponsor. He drove in eight of 11 races during the 1998 season.
Unser was signed to run Team Cheever's second car for the 1998 Indianapolis
500, following in the footsteps of his father Bobby, a three-time Indy winner; his
uncle Al, a four-time winner; and cousin Al Jr., a two-time winner.
Unser started racing go-karts in 1975, winning the New Mexico International
Karting Federation road-racing and dirt division titles in 1981. He raced stock
cars in 1983-84, sprint cars in 1985 and the Skip Barber Pro-Saab Series,
Formula Fords and sprint cars in 1986.
Unser continued his family's dominance of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb by winning
the Group A Rally Division in 1987 and five more titles through 1996. He won
the American Indy Car Series title in 1989, and drove in Indy Lights in 1997.
Unser completed his Indianapolis Motor Speedway rookie test in April 1998.
