Pit injury may speed crew helmets Posted: Sunday May 30, 1999 07:56 PM INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- More pit crews could be wearing helmets in the future. A pit row accident in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday could speed the development of helmets being designed and tested by Bell Auto Racing. Six CART racing teams are using that prototype now, and Bell planned to have helmets available to other teams later this year. On Sunday, company officials said that they will work to get the helmets ready sooner. Bell's general manager, J. Kendall Merrill, said the helmets will be free for any racing teams that want them. | |||||||||||||||||||
