The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 as an auto motive testin and competition facility. When its first series of races caused the original surface of crushed rocks and tar to break up, the track was repaved with 3.2 million bricks.

It has been known as the "Brickyard" ever since. Most of the bricks still remain under the Track's asphalt surface.

Since 1911, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been home to the famed Indianapolis 500. In August 1994, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series visited the 2.5-mile for the inaugural running of the Brickyard 400.
