Ricky Craven was on the verge of superstardom in 1997 -- he finished third in the Daytona 500 that year. But his career was slowed down by a crash at Texas that year, and the New Englander is still trying to ease back into a full-time ride in the Winston Cup Series. He talked with CNNSI.com's Ryan Smithson about his roots, his underdog team, and the Red Sox.

1. You are from Bangor, Maine originally. Where do you make your home now?

I live right here in Concord, N.C. I moved here in 1992. And before that I lived in Concord, N.H.

2. Have you lost a lot of your New England accent?

I don't know if I lost it, or if they took it away. I never had a strong accent, but I am picking up a little Southern drawl.

3. Where has been your favorite place to live?

That is really hard to say. I really love the Carolinas.

4. Where do you go to get away?

We have a summer home on Moosehead Lake in Maine, that has a lot of wildlife and it is certainly a complete opposite from our life here. It's pretty wide-open in Charlotte.

5. Your team (Midwest Transit Racing) will skip a race every now and then. Will you still be in the shop every day?

No, I won't be in the shop every day. We are under-financed and under-staffed, so we are not going to punish ourselves by running every event on the schedule.

6. Why not?

You really diminish the quality. By running fewer races, we can do a better job at the races that we do run. As our program gets more solid, we'll run every week.

7. They are racing in Chicago and Kansas City next year, which one are you looking forward to the most?

It's fun to go to new markets. Obviously, Chicago sticks out in your mind. It makes me think of New York and racing in Manhattan.

8. What is your favorite restaurant in Chicago?

They are all nice. I always go to Morton's Steakhouse -- they originated in Chicago.

9. Have you ever been to Wrigley Field?

No, I haven't. That would be nice. Growing up in New England, Fenway Park had that same type of nostalgia.

10. Are the Red Sox going to win the World Series this year?

That would be nice, but that would also be unusual.
