Sterling Marlin is one of the most popular drivers in the garage among his peers. The native Tennessean has won the Daytona 500 two times, and although he hasn't won since 1996, Marlin is noted for his consistency and abilty to bring the car home in one piece. He spoke to CNNSI.com's Ryan Smithson about football, his son and The Winston Open.

1. You are a native of Columbia, Tenn. How are the Vols going to do this fall?

I talked to them this week. They are pretty optimistic. They have some good young guys coming in, but the talent level is there.

2. Won't this be a down year for them?

They won the national championship with four or five key guys hurt. Everyone thinks it was over for them, and they were just as good as everyone they were playing.

3. How many games are you going to go to this year?

Two or three. I fly to the games.

4. What does your son teen-age son Steadman do nowadays?

He is racing at Nashville Speedway. He ran the Busch race there a few weeks back. He is wanting to work a little harder and move up into the Busch Series.

5. Will he run a more extensive Busch Series schedule next year?

I don't know. It's a little early yet, but we are trying to get some things put together.

6. Does Steadman run every weekend at Nashville in the Late Models?

Yep, he runs there every Saturday night.

7. Where is he going to go to college?

No, he does not like school much. He is graduating school, so I am going to have to fly back for that. He wants to race, and that is what a lot of kids do out of high school.

8. What is your car going to do in the Open Saturday night?

I don't know. We ran the other night. The car won't qualify good but it will race good, so we will see what happens.

9. Several guys won their first race in the past year, and that knocked you out of The Winston field. What are your thoughts on that?

Well, we need to win again. We should have won Martinsville a couple of years ago.

10. What about this year?

We've had a shot to win this year too. We had a good car at Bristol, but we had to pit on the back straightaway and that was a major problem.
