Bobby Hamilton is driving for a team that won three Daytona 500s in the 1990s. He is a three-time winner on the Winston Cup circuit, but all have been on tracks smaller than 1 mile. Though he is usually moving around 188 mph, he slowed down for a few minutes to talk to CNNSI.com's Ryan Smithson.

1. You are a Nashville native. What do you think of the new superspeedway being built?

They are going about it the right way. The banks are low; it’s not a big racetrack. That will keep speeds down and make a good race. It’s like Vegas. Some of these places are just about who has the biggest motor.

2. Are you going to race in the new Busch event there?

No, I ain’t running no Busch cars. I’ll run trucks there, but no Busch cars.

3. What does your son [Busch Series regular Bobby Jr.] think about the new Nashville track?

I have not talked to him about it. He don’t care where he runs; He’d run a race at a 2.5-mile dirt track if they’d let him.

4. Will you be sad to see the old Nashville track go?

Well, it ain’t gone. It was sad to see Winston Cup leave there though. Technology prevails. Everyone is building new tracks, and that new track is going to cover up the old one.

5. You’re known for running a lot of late model stock races, even as a Winston Cup regular. Are you going to do any of that this year?

Bobby Hamilton Bobby Hamilton doesn't have any plans to run any Busch races this year. Andy Lyons/Allsport

No. I haven’t really done that much in the last three years. I ran a couple of Busch races last year, and I won’t do that no more.

6. Why do you run in the Truck Series then?

Well, I own a truck team that runs full-time, and I have to run five races a year for that.

7. Do you have any good stories about your colorful engine builder, Runt Pittman?

Ha. No. I haven’t been here long enough. I am sure I could think of something though.

8. How is your team shaping up for 2000?

We are going to be good. Everyone is pretty pumped up. I do not know what is going to happen because of the Ford scenario.

9. Do you like the new Monte Carlo?

I like it at Rockingham. [Hamilton won there in 1997.] I don’t like it too much at Daytona right now.

10. Are you going to have a good Martinsville car as always? You were so dominant there in 1998.

I never have a good Martinsville car except for that one time. It was just one of those times that we hit it.
