Indy invasion
CART's Montoya wins Indy 500 in impressive fashion
This is just what the Indy Racing League didn’t want to see – a CART regular winning their showcase event. Juan Montoya, the 1999 Champ Car title holder, completely dominated the Indianapolis 500 to become the first rookie to win since Graham Hill in 1966. His teammate Jimmy Vasser finished seventh after running out of gas late in the event. Buddy Lazier, the 1996 winner, finished second and was the only car to seriously challenge Montoya all day.
