INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Indy Racing League rookie Tomas Scheckter is the leader through 300 miles of the 86th Indianapolis 500.

The rookie driver from Capetown, South Africa has led 60 of the 122 laps run.

Scheckter was the leader of the race when the green flag flew on a restart after a fourth-turn crash that was triggered by a blown engine. Tony Kanaan, who had led 14 laps of the race, was in front when he lost control of his G Force/Chevrolet in the fourth turn on the 90th lap. That brought out the yellow flag for a lengthy caution period.

The green flag waved on lap 100, the halfway point of the race, with Scheckter leading IRL drivers Gil de Ferran, Scott Sharp, CART drivers Paul Tracy and Michael Andretti.

Scheckter led by over 5-seconds before he made a scheduled pit stop on lap 121. While the pit stop sequence cycled through, Scheckter was up to second place behind Alex Barron on lap 130. He regained the lead when Barron made his pit stop on lap 132.
