ABINGDON, Va. (AP) -- Robby Gordon, who had been insisting that his driving job with Morgan-McClure Motorsports was safe, was released Wednesday.

Gordon, 32, moved to the team operated by Larry McClure over the winter after running his own Winston Cup operation in 2000.

NASCAR had been buzzing with talk of Gordon's impending departure from the No. 4 Chevrolet for several weeks, but Gordon, a former Indy-car driver, said he had heard nothing from the team or sponsor and that "everybody seems to be pretty happy."

If Busch Grand National driver Kevin Lepage's statement to a radio reporter before Saturday's race -- that it was simply a matter of when, not if he would be driving the No. 4 -- wasn't bad enough, there were the countless rumors that Robby Gordon was driving for his job Sunday. After his performance, Gordon was confident his job was safe.

Gordon made the field for all five races this season, with a best finish of 20th in Atlanta on March 11.

McClure said a driver for Sunday's race in Bristol, Tenn., will be announced Thursday, with a permanent driver for the No. 4 car named at a later date.

Gordon drove his first Winston Cup race in 1991 and has been employed sporadically there since then. He has never run a full-season schedule in NASCAR, driving 20 races for Felix Sabates in 1997 and 17 for his own team, co-owned with Mike Held, last year.
