DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- NASCAR will release its report on the crash that killed Dale Earnhardt on Aug. 21 and experts who took part in the investigation will be present to answer questions.

A NASCAR source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed Thursday the news conference will be held in Atlanta at a site still to be determined.

The story was first reported in Thursday's News-Journal of Daytona Beach.

Talladega's fall race
gets new sponsor, name
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- The Winston Cup race in October at Talladega Superspeedway has a new sponsor and new name -- EA SPORTS 500.

The race had been sponsored for 31 years by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was called the Winston 500. The tobacco corporation ended the relationship after last year's race.

Electronic Arts, a California interactive software firm that produces video games, including NASCAR races, will sponsor the fall race under a three-year agreement, Speedway officials announced Thursday.

The first race under the new sponsor will be Oct. 21 and televised by NBC. It will be the 32nd race on the 36-race Winston Cup schedule.

Last year, Sears ended its 13-year sponsorship of the DieHard 500, the spring race at the Talladega track. The 2002 race will be called the Talladega 500 unless a sponsor is found.

W. Grant Lynch Jr., president of Talladega Superspeedway, said the software company has "both a strong commitment to Talladega and NASCAR as well as an innovative spirit that they bring to this partnership."

Electronic Arts, based in Redwood City, Calif., is entering its fifth year of involvement with NASCAR.

Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap crash during the Feb. 18 Daytona 500 and NASCAR hired experts to do an in-depth investigation. NASCAR president Mike Helton has said as many as 54 people have been working on the report.

The source said the investigation has helped NASCAR develop a computer model of the Earnhardt crash. The report will also include information from the investigations into the earlier deaths of Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr. and Tony Roper.

Among other things, the report is expected to address whether a seat belt was torn, as NASCAR officials have said, and if that contributed to Earnhardt's death. The question has lingered since Earnhardt's widow, Teresa Earnhardt, won a court order sealing the autopsy photos.

A court-appointed medical examiner who viewed the photos said the violent whipping motion of Earnhardt's head was the reason for the driver's death.

Circuit Judge Joseph Will ruled in June that sealing the photos was constitutional. The Independent Florida Alligator and Websitecity.com of DeLand, Fla. have challenged that decision in an attempt to obtain the photos.

The Orlando Sentinel previously challenged an injunction keeping the photos sealed but it later reached an agreement with Mrs. Earnhardt to have an independent expert examine them.
