CNNSI.com's B. Duane Cross offers three points to ponder for Atlanta

1   Will the siren sound off in victory Sunday in Dawsonville?

Sunday will be the 86th Cup event at Atlanta. Twenty-six percent of those races -- 22 -- have been won by an active driver, including a series-leading five by Bill Elliott and Bobby Labonte.

Labonte won the last race at AMS, the NAPA 500 in November. In fact, he's won an Atlanta race in five of the past six years. (Labonte finished second and fifth in the 2000 races.)

But it's "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" who is the sentimental favorite this week. Four drivers have swept Atlanta, but only Elliott has done it twice (1985, 92). However, the '92 fall race was his last win at AMS -- a span of 18 races.

2   Will Dale Jarrett continue his recent spring success at AMS?

In the last seven years, aside from every driver named Bobby Labonte, Dale Jarrett has found his way around the 1.54-mile oval better than most.

In fact, Jarrett has failed to finish in the top five only twice in this race since 1995. Labonte also has failed to crack the top five twice, Jeff Gordon three times. DJ also is one of only seven active drivers with a spring win at Atlanta (1997).

Jarrett is now 16th in the points standings -- a jump of 13 spots -- after his seventh-place finish at Las Vegas, his first top-10 showing of the year. Don't be surprised up he ratchets up his push toward title contention this week.

3   Which active AMS multiple-winners have never won in the spring?

Five active drivers have two or more wins at AMS: Bill Elliott (5), Bobby Labonte (5), Jeff Gordon (3), Mark Martin (2) and Rusty Wallace (2).

Elliott and Gordon each have two spring victories, while Labonte has one. Only Martin and Wallace are W-less in the first race.

Interestingly, the last Atlanta victory for Elliott, Wallace and Martin came during consecutive years in the fall race: Hooters 500 in 1992 (Elliott), '93 (Wallace) and '94 (Martin). Those also were the last wins for their car owners at AMS: Junior Johnson (retired), Roger Penske and Jack Roush, respectively.
