MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The owners of the Martinsville Speedway in Virginia have announced the most expensive expansion in the NASCAR track's history.

The 56-year-old track's owners plan to add 2,000 seats and build a new access road to help fans get in faster. The plan also includes a previously planned relocation of nearby railroad tracks.

The project will cost about $2.5 million dollars. Work is slated to start after the Virginia 500 on April 13th. It should be finished by the time Winston Cup racing returns to Martinsville for the Old Dominion 500 on Oct. 19.

The expansion will give the track a seating capacity of 88,000, raising it into the top half of Winston Cup racetracks.
