Mark Martin's father killed in plane crash
Posted: Monday August 10, 1998 04:43 PM
ELY, Nevada (AP) -- The father of NASCAR Winston Cup driver Mark Martin died Saturday when the small plane he was flying crashed near a national park. Julian Martin's wife and 11-year-old daughter were also killed.
Authorities said the twin-engine Piper went down around noon Saturday outside Great Basin National Park in the foothills of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak near the Utah border.
"It caught the forest on fire," White Pine County Sheriff Bernie Romero said Monday. He said U.S. Bureau of Land Management fire crews were on the scene within a half-hour and discovered the wreckage.
The crash was also reported by military aircraft in the area, he said.
Julian Martin was traveling with his wife, Shelley, and their daughter, Sarah. There were no other passengers.
Romero said he didn't know the origin or destination of the flight. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
Mark Martin is a native of Batesville, Arkansas. His father ran a business in Searcy, Arkansas.
Mark Martin learned of the deaths Sunday after finishing second in The Bud at the Glen at Watkins Glen, New York. A spokeswoman for Martin said the driver expects to race Sunday at Michigan Speedway, where he is defending champion in the DeVilbiss 400.
The funeral is Wednesday in Arkansas.
