Petty diary: Day 1

Sponsor appearances are going to keep me busy

The big week is finally here!

In just a few days, I will make history by becoming the first-ever fourth generation Winston Cup driver. Between now and then, my sponsor Sprint and I will be tackling a week full of Texas-size activities in anticipation of the big day.

My dad and I arrive in Dallas/Fort Worth Monday to begin gearing up for this exciting week leading up to my big debut. It's going to be great. We really kick things off on Tuesday, and it's going to be a full week of action on and off the track.

On Tuesday morning, my dad and I will conduct approximately 20 television interviews by satellite for stations around Texas and all over the United States. I am also going to attend several Sprint events and answer questions during a Busch Series conference call. And that's only the beginning!

NASCAR's Future
Owners have shown they aren't afraid to turn over their cars to young guns. Here are some ages of current Busch Series drivers:
Driver  Age
Adam Petty  19
Casey Atwood  19
Ricky Hendrick  20
Wayne Grubb  21
Lyndon Amick  22
Wayne Grubb  23
Jason Leffler  24
Kevin Harvick  24
Hank Parker Jr.  25

Not only is Sprint giving me their full support, but my whole family is too. My dad just keeps telling me how proud he is of me. We are best friends, so for us to have the opportunity to race together is an honor for both of us. Our family tradition is a source of great pride for all of us, but they try not to pressure me too much. They just want me to do my best and have fun.

We will wrap up the day Tuesday with a special autograph appearance at the Sprint PCS store in Hurst, Texas. Then we'll drop by a local television station for one last interview. It'll be another full day of activities on Wednesday, culminating with another autograph appearance, this time at a Radio Shack store in Mesquite, Texas.

We're going to spend a couple of days talking to the people of Texas through media interviews and autograph appearances. Then we're going to spend the weekend at the track together and hopefully compete against each other for the first time. It's amazing to think at how fast my career is actually moving!

Sprint has been giving away free Pole Day tickets for the qualifying sessions on Thursday and Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, and they'll continue to distribute tickets this week at my autograph appearances, participating Sprint PCS stores and through local radio stations. They hope to have a big crowd on hand to see me make a run at history.

I have been dreaming about this week for a long time. I've always wanted to be a race car driver and to have a chance to race in the Winston Cup Series. It makes it even more special to have my dad here with me.

We're going to meet a lot of great race fans over the next few days and, hopefully, there will be a big crowd at the track on Thursday and Friday for Sprint Pole Days to cheer me on.

I can't wait!

Til Tuesday,
Adam

Adam Petty is in his second full season driving the No. 45 Sprint Chevrolet in the NASCAR Busch Series. His father Kyle, his grandfather Richard and great-grandfather Lee have combined for 263 victories in NASCAR's top series.
