Chevy Corvette to pace Indy 500

Posted: Tuesday February 05, 2002 5:39 PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A Chevrolet Corvette will be the pace car for the Indianapolis 500.

The May 26 race will mark the 13th time a Chevy has led the starting field, and the fifth time for a Corvette.

"This is a milestone event because it will signal the start of a yearlong celebration leading up to Corvette's 50th anniversary in 2003," Corvette manager Rick Baldick said Tuesday.

The Indy pace car will be powered by a standard 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine that produces 350 horsepower.

"Chevrolet and Corvette have a proud and storied history with the Indianapolis 500," Speedway president Tony George said.
