Schumacher earns first Top Fuel win

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- Tony Schumacher earned his first win of the season and the eighth of his career at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals on Sunday.

Schumacher drove his dragster down the quarter-mile track in 4.530 seconds at 321.50 mph to hold off defending champion Larry Dixon who posted a run of 4.615 at 321.42.

Whit Bazemore, Kurt Johnson and Angelle Savoie also won their respective categories at the $1.8 million event, the 10th of 23 this season.

Bazemore used a better reaction time to win for the second time this season in his Dodge Stratus, finishing in 4.872 at 319.67, holding off the quicker Chevy Camaro of Tommy Johnson Jr. that finished in 4.839 at 316.97.

Kurt Johnson moved into the points lead by winning in Pro Stock for the fourth time this season when his Chevy Cavalier covered the distance in 6.791 at 203.40 to hold off rival Jeg Coughlins run of 6.833 at 201.91.

Savoie took the points lead, recording her third win of the season, by defeating fellow Suzuki rider Reggie Showers in the Pro Stock Bike final.
