Edwards wins Built Ford Tough 225 Posted: Saturday July 12, 2003 11:34 PMUpdated: Sunday July 13, 2003 12:15 AM SPARTA, Ky. (AP) -- Carl Edwards raced to his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory Saturday night, beating Ted Musgrave by 3.568 seconds in the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. "I don't think there's any point in my life that has been more stressful than those last 18 to 19 laps. I wanted to win so bad," Edwards said. "I cried the whole last lap." His Roush Racing Ford does not have a primary sponsor. "You can think too much, and you can worry too much about stuff," Edwards said. "Today, I was just generally on a mission. I really felt like winning. Some days you feel like that, and it really helps." The 23-year-old rookie from Columbia, Mo., finished second last week at Kansas Speedway, behind Roush Racing teammate Jon Wood. Wood, who started on the pole in Kentucky, finished fourth, behind Edwards, Musgrave and Dennis Setzer. "To see Carl Edwards win this race was awesome," Musgrave said. "He's a kid who has paid his dues." Edwards qualified fifth Friday night using a backup engine. His original engine broke during Friday afternoon's practice session. Because his engine was changed, he was relegated to the back of the field and started 30th in the 36-truck field. The winner averaged 122.393 mph. Brendan Gaughan led with 39 laps left, but his Dodge blew an engine, giving Edwards the opening he needed. Bobby Hamilton started second and led briefly at the start, but struggled most of the way and finished 18th. Travis Kvapil finished sixth and maintained his lead in the
series points race. He's 41 points ahead of Musgrave, and five
others are within 93 points.
