Unser crewman seriously injured Posted: Sunday August 10, 2003 4:18 PMMADISON, Ill. (AP) -- A crewman for Al Unser Jr. was seriously injured Sunday in a pit accident during the IRL's Emerson Indy 250 at Gateway International Raceway. Unser's left rear tire changer, identified by a member of Unser's Kelley Racing team as Anton Julian, was reported in serious but stable condition by track medical officials. He was transported by medical helicopter to a hospital in St. Louis, Mo. The accident happened during a caution period on lap 42 of the 200-lap race when most of the 21-car field was pitting on the narrow pit lane. Brian Herta slid into the rear of Unser's car, which was on its hydraulic jacks in his pit. Unser's car was quickly pushed away by other crewmen but was too damaged to continue. Herta was able to stay in the race.
