The overhaul at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is expected to be completed by 2000 Matthew Stockman/Allsport

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Crews began demolition of the Tower Terrace grandstands at the south end of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway main straightaway on Monday.

The grandstands will be replaced by 36 pit-side garages and 12 luxury suites in time for the U.S. Grand Prix Formula One race in 2000.

The first phase of the demolition will take about two months for removal of about 4,000 tons of concrete.

"Crews will use track-mounted hydraulic excavators with claw-like devices," Speedway engineering and construction director Kevin Forbes said. "The machines will literally chew the structure apart."

In the second phase of construction, crews will install the utilities and foundation for the garages and suites. Temporary stands will be built on top of the foundations for the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400 races in 1999.

The Tower Terrace was built in 1957.
