BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -- Californian Kenny Roberts finished the 1999 world 500cc championship in Argentina on Sunday just as he started back in Malaysia in April -- triumphantly.

But Roberts was given a stern test by in-form Yamaha rider Max Biaggi before recording his fourth success of the campaign on his Suzuki.

The Italian dueled with the American for much of the race and shot ahead on the last lap only to lose control of his machine near the end.

Biaggi somehow brought his sliding bike back under control after a high-speed excursion on to the grass alongside the track and had to settle for second place.

He certainly ended the season with a bang, posting three second places plus a win in South Africa in the last four races.

Japan's Norick Abe, first in the Brazilian Grand Prix last Sunday, was third on a Yamaha.

Spain's Alex Criville contented himself with fifth place on his Honda after clinching the world title in Rio de Janeiro.

Compatriot Emilio Alzamora finished second to clinch the 125cc world championship by just one point from race winner Marco Melandri of Italy.

Olivier Jacque of France won the 250cc category from Tohru Ukawa of Japan. World champion Valentino Rossi of Italy was third.
