VIENNA (Reuters) - Alexander Wurz has received an unexpected offer to remain in Formula One next season, the Benetton driver's manager Peter Cramer said.

Cramer said he could give no further details about the offer made late on Tuesday to Wurz, who will be replaced by Britain's Jenson Button at Benetton in 2001.

“We suddenly got a new and significantly improved offer for next season in F1. We are seriously considering it,” said Cramer.

Austrian Wurz scored his first points of 2000 by finishing fifth at last weekend's Italian Grand Prix.

Disappointing drives by Wurz this season had led to media speculation he would not be competing in F1 next year.

Austrian media recently reported Wurz might join McLaren as a test driver. Wurz has refused to comment on this option.

Cramer said Wurz would be making an announcement about his future before the Indianapolis Grand Prix in 10 days.
