Bill Belichick

After serving from 1997 to '99 as an assistant on the New York Jets staff, Belichick was expected to succeed then head coach Bill Parcells. Once Parcells resigned in 1999, Belichick gave his surprise resignation five minutes before a news conference set to announce his hiring. The Patriots later hired Belichick, surrendering a first-round draft pick to New York because he was still under contract.
