2008: Seattle SuperSonics become Oklahoma City Thunder

Oklahoma City proved it could support an NBA franchise when it hosted the New Orleans Hornets after Hurricane Katrina. It was rewarded with a team of its own in 2008. Owner Clay Bennett, an Oklahoma City-based businessman, chose the move after his club failed in its quest to build a new arena in Seattle. Some critics questioned whether Bennett, who bought the team in 2006, had made a good-faith effort to keep the franchise in Seattle.
