Nebraska returned to its dominance of the Big 12 North division in 1999, with quarterback Eric Crouch taking the starting job away from Bobby Newcombe and leading the Huskers to an 11-1 record, 5-0 in the North division. A loss to Texas on Oct. 23 cost the Huskers their shot at the national title, but Nebraska earned some revenge, winning the Big 12 title game and the conference's automatic bowl bid in December. Crouch is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but has been picked by many media outlets as the conference's preseason Player of the Year.
