Marat Safin defeated Pete Sampras easily in the men’s final 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, the most lopsided victory over a former champion in 25 years. The 20-year-old Russian won his first Grand Slam title booming 12 aces past Sampras, with some of the serves reaching 136 mph.
