Ian Woosnam found himself atop the leaderboard after the first hole. However, the lead was short-lived as he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for having an extra club in his golf bag. The flustered Woosnam bogeyed two of the next three holes and finished four strokes out of first place. David Duval took advantage of Woosnam's misfortune and Tiger Woods' disappointing play to capture his first major with a 10-under 274 for the tournament.
