Game Day

The 2001 edition of the Midsummer Classic was a bit of an emotional affair, with soon-to-be retirees Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken cornering the spotlight. Ripken and Gwynn were honored by commissioner Bud Selig during a brief ceremony before the sixth inning for their contributions to baseball. Though Gwynn didn’t play, Ripken put his stamp on his 19th All-Star appearance, earning MVP honors as the American League won its fifth consecutive All-Star Game, 4-1.
