Day 1 at Tulsa

Before it was halted by rain late Thursday afternoon, the first day of the 2001 U.S. Open was the stage for two unexpected performances by two familiar faces. Heavily favored to win his fifth consecutive major, Tiger Woods got off to a rocky start by shooting 3-over par through his first nine holes. Senior PGA regular Hale Irwin, a three-time Open champion, experienced no such bad luck as he recorded six birdies and shot a 3-under 67 to take the lead. Here are some highlights from the first day of action in Tulsa.
