Tony Hawk

While the now infamous Z-Boys may have been skateboarding's first stars, Hawk is the reason the sport grew into a worldwide phenomenon. The California native dominated nearly every competition he entered and became the face of skateboarding as it expanded from a niche sport to a worldwide craze. Hawk, more than any other athlete, helped make extreme sports part of the mainstream.
