After a major lull in the late 1960s, Nicklaus was ready to crank it up again in his quest to win the Grand Slam. In 1972, he won at Augusta, then captured the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, proudly displaying the hardware here. That gave him 13 career majors (including U.S. Amateurs), tying him with Bobby Jones at the top of the list. Alas, not even the great Nicklaus could win all four majors in a single year.
