Fernando Valenzuela Fernandomania hit the Los Angeles area in the 1980s like an earthquake, an eruption caused by a beefy Mexican left-hander who rang up victories as quickly as he rang up batters with his electric screwball. In 1981 Fernando Valenzuela opened his career by going 8-0 with four shutouts and an ERA under 1.00. He finished the year winning both the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award, and spent 10 years with the club, earning All-Star honors his first six seasons. Valenzuela retired in 1996 after 17 seasons in the pros.
